Watch your language if you want Ghana’s democracy to last – Akata Pore to Akufo-Addo

Certainly! Let’s delve into the recent statement by Sergeant Daniel Alolga Akata Pore, a former Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) member, regarding Ghana’s democracy and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Sergeant Akata Pore advised President Akufo-Addo to exercise caution with his public statements. Specifically, he expressed concern about the President’s recent remarks regarding the 2024 general elections. According to Akata Pore, such statements can harm Ghana’s democracy. He criticized the President’s stance on not handing over power to a previously defeated opponent (John Mahama), deeming it unbecoming of his position and detrimental to the nation’s welfare.

Akata Pore emphasized that politicians should choose their words carefully, especially in positions of power. He urged President Akufo-Addo and other politicians to bring decency into their behavior if they want Ghana’s democracy to endure. In his words, “If you want this democracy to last, you want the middle class to continue enjoying the honeypot that they’ve gotten from the 1992 constitution, then bring some decency into your behavior.”

Interestingly, Akata Pore also accused the late President Jerry John Rawlings of deceiving them during the June 4 revolution. He revealed that Rawlings had portrayed himself as a believer in Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s ideals to gain support for the coup d’état. However, Akata Pore expressed regret for compromising military intelligence to assist Rawlings in his bid for an uprising.

In summary, Sergeant Akata Pore’s advice serves as a reminder that responsible language and behavior are crucial for the longevity of any democracy. Let’s hope that Ghana’s leaders take heed and continue to uphold democratic values for the benefit of all citizens.
